Chicago, a city on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S . Nearly 40 million people visit Chicago annually. Chicago is recognized across the United States as a very passionate sports town. It owns attractions around every corner.

City Highlights:

Conventions bring many people to Chicago each week during most of the year. This constant visitor influx means hotels, museums, restaurants, attractions, and events tend to be crowded. The annual Taste of Chicago (late June and early July) attracts visitors from the Chicagoland area and from nearby states, and coincides with Fourth of July celebrations.

1.    Shedd Aquarium

This 75-year-old institution are enduring favourites such as piranhas, frogs and snakes of the Amazon; rays, turtles and moray eel of the Caribbean; frightening predator sharks and, the most storied of them all, a 100-plus-year-old Australian lungfish believed to be the longest-living fish in any aquarium in the world.

 It also owns a “’Aquatic Show," a live animal show featuring a rotating group of Shedd residents. For more live animal fun, you can also sign up for "Penguin Encounter," a 30-minute introduction to one of the aquarium's penguins.

 

2.    Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is definitely one of the top things to see in Chicago. Inside you'll see famous masterpieces like American Gothic, as well as the greatest impressionist collection outside Paris. It owns more than 300,000 artworks and artefacts from all over the world and every era from antiquity to the present.

Renzo Piano’s light-filled Modern Wing,  is the perfect place to enjoy the Art Institute’s architecture and design collection, modern and contemporary art, and gorgeous views of Millennium Park.        

    

3.    Adler Planetarium

The planetarium is home to one of the world's most technologically advanced dome theatres. The Galaxy Wall — the largest and most complete view of our Milky Way. Must see is the destination Solar System in the Grainger Sky Theatre. This 30-minute show is a tour of the best of the Solar System and will help you see it in a whole new way.

 The planetarium is home to nine exhibitions and multiple theatres. In the historic Atwood Sphere you can experience how the night sky looked in Chicago in 1913.               

4.    The Field Museum

A  4.5 billion years of history under one roof it  is also one of the few places in the United States where you can visit an ancient Egyptian tomb featuring mummies, a Book of the Dead, and artifacts from everyday Egyptian life. Founded to house the biological and anthropological collections assembled for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893

Inside the permanent displays, it houses glowering dinos, marvel at ancient artefacts from a royal Egyptian tomb.

 

5.    Skydeck Chicago

The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere beckons with its mesmerizing views of Chicago and beyond .The brave of heart can step out onto The Ledge, a glass-enclosed balcony.

The Ledge's glass boxes extend 4.3 feet out from the building, letting you have a clear view all the way down the 1,353 to the bottom.

 

6.    360 CHICAGO

Located in the heart of the Windy City’s tourist district. Formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory, 360 Chicago offers dining, sights and an interactive tour far above the city streets.  The fastest elevators in North America zoom to the 94th floor 1,000 feet (305 meters) up — in only 40 seconds

A recent addition is the Tilt attraction, which allows visitors to step onto an enclosed platform that extends from the building at a 30 degree angle.

 

7.    Museum of Science and Industry

The largest science center in the Western Hemisphere. In the Science Storms exhibit you  can see a 40-foot tornado, 20-foot Tesla Coil, and a 30-foot avalanche disc. For a real eye-opening experience, watch an Omni max show in Chicago's only five-story, domed, wrap-around theatre.

 

8.    Navy Pier

Navy Pier is truly a city within the city. With shopping, restaurants, parks and gardens, museums, stages and attractions galore, this Chicago landmark attracts millions every year. If theatre is your thing, Navy Pier is home to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, a leading international theatre company dedicated to creating extraordinary productions.

It's no wonder that Navy Pier is often considered one of the top things to do in Chicago, no matter what the weather.

9.    Millennium Park

A 5-acre (2.2 hectares) garden, which confirms that Millennium Park lives up to the Chicago’s official Latin motto: Urbs in Horto — City in a Garden. With hundreds of free concerts and performances offered throughout the year at the dramatic Jay Pritzker Pavilion, you're likely to be able to catch one when you're in town.

10.  The Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile is a mecca for tourists and business people, and bolsters. The Magnificent Mile is the best shopping in Chicago, with store that everything, Whether it's clothing, jewellery, toys, or pet boutiques The Magnificent Mile has something for everyone.

11.  Grant Park

Grant Park is Chicago's front yard, has wonderful public art all around the park.  Between the towering architecture of the city and the lakefront is a marvellous piece of land free of buildings and full of life .Buckingham Fountain shoots water 150-feet into the air once every hour. 

12.  Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park Zoo has free admission and features a wide variety of family-friendly                   exhibits. The Orchid House, the Fernery, the Palm House, and the Show House, all contain beautiful bits of nature that provide visitors with an immediate sense of calm and relaxation.

13.  Cloud Gate

A futuristic, silvery bean known as Cloud Gate made its way to Chicago at the grand opening of Millennium Park in 2004. It's seamless design and shiny exterior produces entertaining and distorted reflections of anyone and everything, 360 degrees around.

If you're around in the evening, there's nothing like the reflection of the night sky. The bean turns black with only the city lights defining its shape.
